The Rule of 3’s

Shy Dog? No Problem!

Does your dog seem shy and uneasy now that you’ve brought them home? Some dogs may adjust quickly but, other may take a little bit of time. All they need from you through this is a little bit of patience.

What is the Rule of 3’s?

The Rule of 3’s refers to the time it takes for your dog to adjust after bringing them home from the shelter.

First 3 Days

In the first 3 days, your dog may be overwhelmed by their new surroundings, allow them this time to adjust.

Things to watch for:

Lack of Appetite

Hiding (under
furniture/in their crate)

Testing Boundaries
(eg. destructive behaviour)

Nervousness

What you can do:

Start a routine

Give them space

Stay calm

Give clear direction

Be sure not to force any interaction with your new pup during this time, just be patient and stay positive.

First 3 Weeks

After 3 weeks your pet should start showing their personality as they feel more comfortable with their new environment. You may start to notice some behaviour issues become more apparent, making it important to set expectations and boundaries, and to reinforce training.

First 3 Months

You pet should have confidence and feel comfortable in their new home. You’ve bonded, building trust and helped them feel secure with you. They have a steady routine, expecting meals, walks, play time, treats, etc. Keeping up their routine and reinforcing training will make sure you and your new pet can enjoy your days together.
